Advent Pioneers

The men and women who kept the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus after the Great Disappointment. Two groups. One foundation. One final conflict. The 144,000 sealing is now in progress.

“The history of the early experiences in the message will be a power to withstand the masterly ingenuity of Satan’s deceptions.”
— Ellen G. White, Letter 99, 1905

The Three Angels' Messages — Revelation 14:6–12

The foundational proclamation of the Advent movement, written on the 1843 and 1850 prophetic charts.

"And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth… Fear God, and give glory to him; for the hour of his judgment is come: and worship him that made heaven, and earth, and the sea, and the fountains of waters."

— Revelation 14:6–7 (KJV) — First Angel's Message

"And there followed another angel, saying, Babylon is fallen, is fallen, that great city, because she made all nations drink of the wine of the wrath of her fornication."

— Revelation 14:8 (KJV) — Second Angel's Message

"Here is the patience of the saints: here are they that keep the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus."

— Revelation 14:12 (KJV) — Third Angel's Message

"When the messages of the three angels come prominently before the world again just before the second advent of Christ, the angel of Revelation 18:1 joins in the proclamation… 'Babylon is fallen.' 'Come out of her, my people.'"

— Ellen G. White, Early Writings, Appendix, 304.1

Two Groups — One Foundation

The Advent movement produced two distinct streams: the historic Adventist pioneers who built on the foundation of 1844, and the new organization incorporated April 15, 1904 — joining church and state, mirroring the Vatican model the Mayflower pilgrims' ancestors fled in 1620.

Historic Adventist Pioneers

The Foundation — 1840s to 1863

These men and women came out of the fallen churches after 1844. They accepted the Three Angels' Messages, the seventh-day Sabbath, the heavenly sanctuary, the commandments of God, and the faith of Jesus. They built on the prophetic waymarks of 1840, 1843, 1844.

"To the END OF TIME, the PRESENCE of the Spirit is to abide with the TRUE church."

— Acts of the Apostles, p. 55
  • William Miller — Student of Daniel 8:14
  • Captain Joseph Bates — Sabbath Advocate and Sealing
  • James & Ellen White — Co-founders
  • Charles Fitch — "Come Out of Her My People" (1843)
  • Hiram Edson — Heavenly Sanctuary revelation
  • John N. Andrews — History of the Sabbath
  • Otis Nichols — 1850 Prophetic Chart

New Organization — April 15, 1904

The Corporate Turn — Church & State Joined

On April 15, 1904, five men signed the articles of incorporation creating the General Conference Corporation of Seventh-day Adventists — registered as a corporation under civil law, with EIN 52-0643036, assets over $10 million.

Ellen White warned: "We cannot now enter into any new organization; for this would mean apostasy from the truth." — 1 Selected Messages, p. 204.2

  • Incorporated April 15, 1904 in Washington, D.C.
  • Signers: Daniells, Scott, Rogers, Nicola, Needham
  • Joins church & state — Vatican / Church of England model
  • The same system the Mayflower pilgrims fled in 1620
  • Profits from Sabbath labor through corporate filing

Ellen G. White — 1 Selected Messages, p. 204.2

"The enemy of souls has sought to bring in the supposition that a great reformation was to take place among Seventh-day Adventists, and that this reformation would consist in giving up the doctrines which stand as the pillars of our faith, and engaging in a process of reorganization. Were this reformation to take place, what would result?

The principles of truth that God in His wisdom has given to the remnant church, would be discarded. Our religion would be changed. The fundamental principles that have sustained the work for the last fifty years would be accounted as error. A new organization would be established. Books of a new order would be written. A system of intellectual philosophy would be introduced."

— Selected Messages Book 1, p. 204.2

The 144,000 — The Sealing — The Bride of Christ

Since October 22, 1844 the investigative judgment has been in progress — the bride-selection work. When the number of the 144,000 is made up, probation will close and Michael will stand up. Daniel 12:1.

"Christ is waiting with longing desire for the manifestation of Himself in His church. When the character of Christ shall be perfectly reproduced in His people, then He will come to claim them as His own."

— Christ's Object Lessons, p. 69

"And at that time shall Michael stand up, the great prince which standeth for the children of thy people: and there shall be a time of trouble, such as never was since there was a nation even to that same time: and at that time thy people shall be delivered, every one that shall be found written in the book."

— Daniel 12:1 (KJV)

Captain Joseph Bates — A Seal of the Living God (1849)

Captain Joseph Bates connected the Sabbath to the sealing of the 144,000 in Revelation 7. His 1849 tract A Seal of the Living God showed that the seventh-day Sabbath is the seal of the living God — the identifying mark of those who keep the commandments of God and the faith of Jesus.

"And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely."

— Revelation 22:17 (KJV)

The contest of contests has been underway since October 22, 1844. Those who keep the seventh-day Sabbath and the Ten Commandments and the faith of Jesus go by faith into the Most Holy Heavenly Sanctuary — married to the Lamb of God, His Bride. Come out of her, my people — into home churches, studying the articles, sermons, tracts, charts, and books of the historic Adventist pioneers.

— Revelation 18:4; Revelation 14:12

Why We Republish — The Dead Still Speak

Faithful men like William Miller, John Andrews, James White, Charles Fitch, and Otis Nichols — whose writings, charts, and sermons laid the Advent foundation — have been systematically buried. Apostate SDA pastors and leaders say, “Oh, but they were not inspired.” This single lie stops people from investigating their writings. Ellen White did the exact opposite. She commanded the church to repeat their words.

William Ward Simpson — whose personal effects are in the basement of the James White Library at Andrews University — is one of dozens of pioneers whose voice has been suppressed by the very institution that bears the pioneer name.

John 17:20 (KJV) — Jesus Himself Guarantees the Chain

“Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on me through their word.

— The Lord Jesus Christ, John 17:20 — Faith comes through the word of the pioneers. Suppressing that word cuts God’s people off from the chain of faith.

“The record of the experience through which the people of God passed in the early history of our work must be republished.

— Ellen G. White, Letter 105, 1903

“The standard-bearers who have fallen in death, are to speak through the reprinting of their writings to bear their testimony as to what constitutes truth for this time.”

— Ellen G. White, CWE 32

“Let those who are dead speak by reprinting their articles.

— Ellen G. White, MS 62, 1905

Rehearse the experience of the men who acted a part in the establishment of our work in the beginning.”

— Ellen G. White, MS 129, 1905

“The history of the early experiences in the message will be a power to withstand the masterly ingenuity of Satan’s deceptions.

— Ellen G. White, Letter 99, 1905

Repeat the words of the pioneers in our work, who knew what it cost to search for the truth as for hidden treasure, and who labored to lay the foundation of our work.”

— Ellen G. White, Review & Herald, May 25, 1905
The Boundary That Cannot Move
